ALBUM OF THE WEEK: IS TROPICAL - BLACK ANYTHING

ARTIST: IS TROPICAL
ALBUM: BLACK ANYTHING
'Black Anything' is the new album from London 4-piece Is Tropical. This is the third record the band have released, with this one coming out through Axis Mundi Records. They were previously signed to Kitsune, who put out their debut 'Native To' (2011) and the follow up 'I'm Leaving' (2013).

The new record was produced by Luke Smith, who helped the band with an ambitious project of recording the album across 5 different continents and released on 5 separate 10" vinyl picture discs. The music traverses the travels the band experienced across the recording process, with each of the vinyl's containing two tracks which are influenced by their particular surroundings; Part 1 is from North America , Part 2 is Europe, Part 3 is Africa, Part 4 is Asia, and Part 5 is South America.

The music found on Black Anything is a mix between electronica and rock, and as you might expect from an album with such a different recording process there is much variation to be found. It's a record which sounds wholly positive and upbeat but always seems to maintain a darker edge, flirting between gorgeous pop melodies and deep basslines with grittier guitars and off rhythm beats.
